General Info

Tucked away on Agamemnonstraat 27, 1076 JA Amsterdam, Netherlands, Umeno Amsterdam brings a refined Japanese dining experience to a calm neighborhood setting. From the moment you step inside, the atmosphere feels upmarket yet relaxed, making it a comfortable spot whether you’re meeting friends or enjoying solo dining. The space is thoughtfully arranged, clean, and welcoming, with all the practical comforts in place, including a well-kept toilet and attentive service throughout the evening.

The menu leans confidently into Japanese classics, and it shows in every plate that arrives at the table. Sashimi is a clear highlight, served fresh and clean, allowing the natural flavors to shine without distraction. For those who enjoy variety, the Sushi Large option is ideal, offering a generous selection that feels both satisfying and well-balanced. Each bite reflects careful preparation, which is something frequently mentioned in positive reviews from returning guests.

Tempura adds another layer to the experience, bringing a light crunch that pairs nicely with the more delicate dishes on the menu. It’s not heavy or greasy, making it easy to share or enjoy alongside sushi and sashimi. Edamame is a simple but essential starter here, perfect for easing into the meal while you take in the calm rhythm of the dining room. These small touches help the overall flow of dinner feel unhurried and intentional.

Dessert is where Umeno Amsterdam really surprises. The black sesame ice cream stands out with its deep, nutty flavor and smooth texture. It’s not overly sweet, which makes it a great finish after a savory meal. Guests who appreciate great dessert often leave talking about this final course just as much as the main dishes.

Dinner reservations are recommended, especially during busy evenings, as the restaurant’s reputation continues to grow. Its location makes it a convenient choice for locals and visitors alike, and the consistent quality across food and service explains why it holds a strong place among trusted Japanese restaurant locations in the city. Whether you’re browsing menus online or reading through reviews, Umeno Amsterdam delivers an experience that feels polished, authentic, and genuinely enjoyable from start to finish.

What customers say?

“ Incredible omakase experience. Slow food. Carefully crafted. Enjoyable experience. We were a group of four and were very pleased with the variety, quality and quantity! Would def be back. ”

“ This place is 5 stars all in all. The food was incredible and authentic, you will only get quality ingredients here. The server is SO attentive, the moment you’re finished they are immediately aware of it, and they don’t interrupt you at all. If you want to dine here you MUST make a dinner reservation, and the time slot to make one is only on the 1st and 25th of the month. You essentially cannot choose the dishes because it is omakase, but you can choose from 1 of 2 course sets. What an experience. Absolutely worth it. ”

- Megan Leong -

“ The food was exceptional, with standout dishes including the fishcake and tuna (toro). The fishcake had a perfect texture and was full of flavor, while the toro was buttery and used in various ways. A nice addition was the uni (sea urchin) in combination with the oyster. The service was also great, with the chef and staff being attentive and knowledgeable about each dish. However, the only criticism I had was that the courses were served quite quickly after each other. This may be the norm during an omakase experience, but it did make it feel a bit rushed at times. Overall, I highly recommend this omakase experience for anyone who loves high-quality sushi and Japanese cuisine. Overall, this is the best place for traditional Japanese food in Amsterdam. ”

“ Great dinner at Umeno. Friendly staff and definitely appreciated that they’re able to speak Dutch too. This place only accepts a select amount of customers per evening making it a lovely experience. I love bluefin tuna but many courses consisted of this type of fish so ultimately it was a bit overpowering. Overall I did like the combination of dishes served. The experience takes about 3.5h ”

“ I visited this restaurant today through a friend's recommendation, and it was a fantastic experience! Don't be fooled by the exterior decor of the restaurant. What is prepared and served inside is of extraordinary quality. The sushi was delicious, and the fish literally melted in your mouth. It's a charming family restaurant where the father prepares the sushi, and the sons serve it with detailed explanations. In short, a fantastic experience and definitely worth repeating! ”

“ I went through a phase where I watched a lot of food review videos and used to be a bit skeptical about people getting teary-eyed from how good something tasted. But when we had the first bite of the tuna-avocado tartare, I understood—it was a natural response. The rest of the menu, the staff and the atmosphere was also amazing but the tartare was definitely the highlight. ”

“ A little gem, hadn’t been in a year. If possible they’ve upped their game even further. Their fixed menu is simply made to perfection. The dichotomy of the simple exterior paired with the pure beauty of their food and service is just stunning. I would rate this as the best Japanese restaurant in Amsterdam any day hands down ”

“ Probably one of Amsterdam’s lesser-known izakaya-style spots, and a little outside the city centre — but easily one of the best I’ve visited recently. Umeno has this lovely old-school charm; we even had to take off our shoes to sit in one of the four private booths. We went for the set menu, and I had the sake pairing. Every dish that came out was beautifully prepared and full of flavour, with super friendly and attentive service throughout. The highlights for me were a unique tuna dish with avocado and raw egg yolk that you mix together at the table, and the incredibly fresh selection of fish. Highly recommended if you want authentic Japanese in a cosy, traditional setting. ”
